About Roman Numerals Quest
Roman Numerals Quest teaches the number system of ancient Rome. Read the number carved on a milestone and tap the answer, or build a numeral yourself from letter tiles: I, V, X, L, C, D and M, each with its value printed underneath. Every right answer breaks the number into its parts, so 1984 shows as M + CM + LXXX + IV, which is exactly how to work out any numeral.
Eight lessons build up step by step: I, V and X; numbers up to 20; the take-away rule, where a small letter before a bigger one is subtracted (IV is 4, IX is 9); L for fifty; C for a hundred; D and M; famous years carved on monuments, such as MCDXCII for 1492 when Columbus crossed the Atlantic; and a grand champion round. Wrong answers explain the slip, for example that IIII is not a proper numeral because Romans never write four of a letter in a row.
Every two stars add a new piece to your own Roman villa: walls, columns, a fountain, a vineyard, a bath house, an arena and finally a laurel crown. A checking script tests every number from 1 to 3999 both ways and makes sure the game never accepts an improper numeral.
