About Go Quest
Go is a board game from China that is about 4,000 years old and is still played by millions of people. Players take turns placing black and white stones where the lines cross. Stones never move, but a stone or group of stones with no empty points next to it (no liberties) is captured. In the end, whoever owns more of the board wins.
Go Quest teaches it step by step. You start with Capture Go, the way children in Go clubs learn, where the first capture wins, against friendly opponents on a tiny board. Then come 18 capture puzzles where exactly one move captures, and real Go on 7x7 and 9x9 boards against stronger and stronger computer players. They use Monte Carlo tree search, the same idea behind the strongest Go programs, so the last ones take a lot of thought to beat.
The rules are the real ones: no suicide, the ko rule, passing and area scoring with half a point for white so there are no ties. At the end the game shows who owns every point. A robot tested the rules, checked every puzzle has only one answer, and played the computer opponents against each other to make sure each one on the ladder is stronger than the last. Stars unlock new board styles.
