HOW TO PLAY

  1. Players take turns putting a stone on an empty point where the lines cross. You are black and go first. Stones never move.
  2. The empty points next to a stone (up, down, left, right) are its liberties. Stones touching each other share their liberties.
  3. If a group has no liberties left, it is captured and taken off the board. One liberty left is called atari: save it or lose it!
  4. Capture Go: the first player to capture anything wins.
  5. Real Go: you win by owning more of the board. When you have nothing useful left to do, press Pass. When both players pass, each side scores its stones plus the empty points it surrounds. White gets half a point extra, so there are no ties.
  6. You cannot play where your stone would have no liberties (unless it captures), and you cannot take back a single stone right after it captured one of yours (that is the "ko" rule).

YOU WIN!
