About Viking Tafl
Tafl games are the board games the Vikings played long before chess reached the north. One side has a king and a few defenders in the middle of the board. The other side has twice as many attackers around the edges. Every piece moves in a straight line like a rook in chess, and you capture an enemy by trapping it between two of your own pieces.
The defenders win if the king reaches one of the four corner squares, and the attackers win if they trap the king: with two attackers out in the open, or on all four sides when he is on or next to the throne in the middle. Play Brandubh, the Irish game on a 7 by 7 board, or Tablut on 9 by 9, which Carl Linnaeus wrote down in Lapland in 1732.
Fight through a saga of eight battles against Viking jarls who get smarter as you go, from Bjorn the Bold to Odin the Old, or set up a free battle against the computer or a friend. Red danger rings show pieces that could be captured, a hint shows a good move, and every win unlocks a Viking history fact and new pieces.
