About Sun Smart Squad
Sun Smart Squad teaches children how to enjoy sunshine without getting burnt. It follows World Health Organization sun safety advice, starting with the sun kit: something for your head, your eyes and your skin, plus water and shade, while a thick coat, a fizzy drink or a chocolate bar will not help.
The UV index tells you how strong the sun's burning rays are, from Low (0 to 2) through Moderate, High and Very high to Extreme (11 and above), and protection is needed from 3 upwards. Children read an hourly UV forecast to find the safest time to play, seeing that UV is strongest in the middle of the day, and learn to put more sunscreen on every two hours and straight after swimming.
The shadow rule gives a quick check without any app: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun is strong, so find shade. True-or-myth rounds explain that clouds do not block all UV, that snow reflects it, and that everyone, whatever their skin colour, can get sunburnt. Stars collect sun hats.
