About Shut the Box
Shut the Box is an old dice game played in pubs, on boats and in classrooms. Roll two dice and add them up, then flip down any open tiles that make the same total: a roll of 8 could shut the 8, or 5 and 3, or 4, 3 and 1. When the 7, 8 and 9 are all shut you may roll just one die.
Keep going until you roll a number you cannot make. Your score is the total of the tiles still open, so lower is better, and shutting every tile scores a perfect 0. Every roll is a little puzzle in number bonds: which tiles add up to this number, and which ones should I keep for later?
Play on your own for stars, against an easy computer or a clever one that plays the best possible way, or with a friend on the same device. Try the Little 1-6 box, the Classic 1-9 box or the Big 1-12 box, and earn box points for new looks. The hint button shows the best tiles to shut.
