About Shadow Studio
Shadow Studio teaches the light and shadow skills artists use to make flat drawings look solid. The bright shine on a ball, called a highlight, always faces the lamp, and the far side falls into shade. In the first lesson you look at the shine and tap where the lamp must be, then you pick which ball is shaded correctly for a lamp you can see.
Next come cast shadows: an object blocks the light, so its shadow falls on the ground on the side away from the sun. When the sun is high, shadows are short; when it is low in the morning or evening, they stretch out long. Cubes show how flat faces each get one tone, lightest where they face the lamp, which artists call light, half-tone and shadow.
Later lessons have eight lamp positions and a spot-the-mistake round where one object is shaded as if the light came from somewhere else. Artist's tips help when you are stuck. After lesson four a free studio lets you move a lamp around a ball and a cube and move the sun to watch shadows grow, and stars unlock new paint colours.
