About Ranger Map School
Ranger Map School teaches the map skills park rangers and hikers use. Each puzzle shows a freshly drawn park map with real-style symbols: a tent for a campsite, a cross on a square for a church, P for parking, a star for a viewpoint, tree circles for woodland and more, with north at the top and a scale bar in the corner.
The lessons cover the map key, the eight compass directions with the Never Eat Soggy Waffles trick, measuring straight-line distance by counting scale bars, maps with different scales from 200 metres to 2 kilometres, and ranger orders that combine a distance and a direction to find a place.
Two lessons explain contour lines, which join places at the same height: points inside more lines are higher, and lines bunched close together mean a steep slope. A ranger tip helps with each kind of puzzle, and a ruler shows half-scale-bar steps on distance questions. Two stars in a lesson earn a ranger badge.
