About Home Row Heroes
Home Row Heroes teaches touch typing, typing without looking at the keys. It starts the way typing teachers do, with your fingers resting on the home row: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right, with the little bumps on F and J to find your place. The first lesson uses only F and J, and every lesson after adds two or more new keys.
The on-screen keyboard is coloured by finger, so you can always see which finger should press the glowing key, and a message says it in words. Each lesson starts with a warm-up of the new keys, then real words made only from letters you already know, from fad and lash to quick and brown, and the last lesson adds capital letters and punctuation. Wrong keys turn red and you press the right one to carry on.
Your score is accuracy (how many keys you got right) and speed in words per minute. Accuracy comes first: 90% right passes, and stars need a little more speed too. Your hero runs along a path of gems towards a castle as you type, and stars unlock new heroes. It works best with a real keyboard, but you can tap the text to type on a tablet or phone.
