About Best Buy Detective
Best Buy Detective teaches a real shopping skill: comparing value. Two or three packs sit on the shelf, like 6 cookies for $1.80 or 10 for $2.70, and you decide which is the best buy. The trick is to work out the price of one item, or of 100 grams or 100 millilitres, the same unit price that many shops print in small letters on their shelf labels.
The case files build up step by step: more for the same price, price per item, price per 100 g, deals like buy 2 get 1 free and 2 for $5, percent off, three packs at once, and finally only what you need, where the pack with the cheapest price per item can cost more in total and leave lots spare. About half the cases are traps where the biggest pack or the shiny deal is NOT the best buy, so quick guesses do not work.
After every answer the working is shown on each label, such as $3.90 ÷ 10 = 39¢ per 100 g. A clue shows the working for one pack. The money you save by choosing well goes into a piggy bank that unlocks detective kit, from a notebook to a sniffer dog.
