About Atom Builder 3D
Atom Builder 3D lets kids put atoms together piece by piece. Asked to build carbon, you add 6 red protons and 6 grey neutrons to the nucleus, then 6 blue electrons, which fly into shells around it: 2 in the first shell, 4 in the next. The game explains each mistake, for example that 7 protons would make nitrogen, not carbon.
Ten experiments go from hydrogen and helium up to potassium and calcium. Other questions show a spinning atom and ask which element it is, how many neutrons it has, how many electrons sit in the outer shell, or what charge an ion has when it gains or loses electrons. Every element you build correctly joins your own periodic table, laid out in the real rows, with a fact about it: helium makes balloons float, calcium makes your bones strong.
With red-green, red-blue or red-cyan 3D glasses, electrons come out of the screen as they swing round the front of the atom and sink behind the nucleus at the back; it plays in colour without them. The atoms use the simple shell model taught in school, and a checking script tests every question against real data for the first 20 elements.
